THE CORAL COLONY TABLE

SCULPTURAL FURNITURE – COLLECTIBLE DESIGN

Limited Edition of Three

Inspired by the remarkable formations of table corals of the reefs beneath the sea, Nidanin’s Coral Colony Table explores the relationship between nature, craftmanship and contemporary sculptural furniture.

Growing outward in layered, plate-like structures, table corals create shelter, shade and space for marine life within the coral reef. Fascinated by the way these natural formations grow and support life, Nidanin reimagined their organic shapes and layered structures as a functional sculpture, bringing a little of the underwater world into our everyday spaces.

Heritage and Concept

Beyond its sculptural form, the work carries a deeper connection to the UAE’s coastal heritage. Just as coral formations provide shelter for marine life beneath the sea, coral stone once formed part of the coral stone walls of traditional coastal homes, offering protection and shelter to the communities living within them.
Bringing these two worlds together, The Coral Colony Table celebrates the relationship between nature, memory and contemporary design. More than a functional object, it is an exploration of how the beauty and the intelligence of natural forms can become part of the spaces we inhabit.

With The Coral Colony Table, Nidanin aims to encourage a little more curiosity, awareness and care for the natural world that continues to inspire all.

Materials and Craftsmanship

At the heart of the piece is a collection of individual hand-carved walnut forms, each with its own curves, textures and character. Carefully, shaped and fitted together like a puzzle, they surround found and rescued coral stone fragments, creating a richly detailed foundation. From this intricate base, the sculpture gradually opens into broader elevated surfaces, connected through an organically carved wooden form. The three levels echo the natural movement of the table corals, while the opening in the upper surface offers changing perspectives through the work.

Every element is shaped by hand, allowing the natural character of the wood and the coral-inspired forms to guide the carving process. Even the smallest details become sculptures, contributing to a larger composition that balances strength, delicacy and movement.

Entirely handcrafted at Nidanin Studio in the Heart of Sharjah, The Coral Colony Table reflects a slow, thoughtful approach to making from the first cuts and individual carvings to the careful assembly and final finishing. Natural materials are treated with respect, with an emphasis on craftsmanship, durability and longevity.

"The Saffar of Coral"

Welcoming a new journey “The Saffar” to the harbor carrying maritime stories shaped by the sea.

Inspired by the maritime heritage of the UAE, “The Saffar of Coral” is a site-specific installation commissioned by 1971 - Design Space and created for the rooftop terrace of 1971 - Design Space, Sharjah. Combining hand-carved forms inspired by waves and Arabian dhows with the textures of preserved rescued coral, the work reflects on the memories embedded within the coastline and the materials that once shaped coastal homes.

Designed to respond to the wind, shifting sunlight, and the rhythm of the port, the installation changes throughout the day, becoming a living dialogue between heritage and the present. Hand-carved dhow stools invite visitors to pause and witness the rhythm of the harbor, transforming the experience into a moment of reflection and connection. More than a static object, The Saffar of Coral acts as a bridge between the horizon and the home, and between the stories of the past and those yet to come.

There are still many stories in this sea left to tell.
